Rafa Macarrón, aun teniendo una vocación temprana por la pintura, no comienza a dedicarse plenamente a ella hasta los veintiséis años, después de consolidarse como profesional en el ciclismo. Esto implica una formación alejada del mundo académico, acorde con la de los que desde siempre han sido sus referentes e inspiradores, K. Haring y Basquiat en especial (pero también Dubuffet, con gran formación académica pero que integra en su obra el Art Brut). Autodidacta, ha estado desde siempre en contacto con artistas e intelectuales y ha sido un atento observador de la escena artística, tanto contemporánea como histórica.
Muchas de sus obras son de tamaño monumental. Aunque no haya practicado el graffiti en la calle de forma continuada, sí incorpora el mismo tipo de impacto en la arquitectura y el urbanismo, en comunicación directa con todo tipo de público. Coetáneo de otros artistas que trabajan en el mismo sentido, como D.Doyle u Os Gemeos, Macarrón busca esa relación directa mediante un dibujo espontáneo y visceral, narrativo hasta cierto punto, en pacto abierto con el comic y el graffiti. No obstante, en sus pinturas predomina la emoción y el estado mental sobre el juego de la representación, siempre inmerso o bañado en una atmósfera de poderosa plasticidad.
La obra de Rafa Macarrón trasciende convenciones artísticas para alcanzar un contacto íntimo con el espectador y la sociedad. Inundada de actividad, de colores vivos, materiales pegados y apilados, figuras que se encaraman las unas sobre las otras, la energía que destilan sus cuadros se puede equiparar a la del artista en sí, trabajando de forma incesante para captar su entorno. Rafa Macarrón vive en movimiento (ya sea pedaleando o pintando) y de ese movimiento interno nace el deseo no sólo de crear, sino también de captar el movimiento y la creación diaria de los demás. Como para el artista, tampoco hay respiro para la sociedad, conformada, en esta nueva obra, por un ritmo incesante de figuras moviéndose, divirtiéndose, duchándose, fumando e incluso bostezando. Títulos como “Cosmos,” “Génesis,” “343 almas” o “Al Alba” indican que, aquí, la producción individual constituye y conduce a la creación colectiva y popular tanto en su dimensión social, artística, espiritual como biológica.
La actividad diaria está compuesta de innumerables pequeños momentos, y Rafa Macarrón les presta atención. Su inspiración es tanto la lengua vernácula como la académica, y su aproximación al sujeto en movimiento es espontánea, motivada por su deseo de creación y acogiendo la subjetividad de su propia perspectiva. Quizá por eso sus figuras existen en un paisaje onírico de colores vivos, deformadas y descompuestas, nacidas de la imaginación y conscientes de su irrealidad.
Rafa Macarrón (Madrid, 1981) vive y trabaja en Madrid. Macarrón crea personajes únicos que reclaman todo el protagonismo de cada obra y que encarnan a un tiempo lo universal y lo irrepetible. En sus cuadros, Macarrón crea escenas oníricas y un mundo de personajes insólitos que a pesar de su dramatismo y deformidad desprenden ternura y amabilidad. Con un estilo y lenguaje definido, su pintura es fluida, fresca y armoniosa en su conjunto. Influido por el cómic, la pintura española de los 50 y los 60, la obra de Fraile, Matta o Quirós, Macarrón se convierte en un referente de la pintura de nuestro tiempo. Ganador del primer premio de pintura BMW en 2011, ha estado presente en diversos países y ha participado en numerosas ferias como Context Art Miami, ARCOmadrid, Zona Maco, ArtBo, Art Miami o Art Moscow.

Although painting was Rafa Macarrón’s early calling, he didn’t commit to it fully until he was twenty-six, after having established himself as a professional cyclist. This background implies a visual arts training that took place outside the academic world, but one that is consistent with that of those who have always been his references and sources of inspiration, especially K. Haring and Basquiat – but also Dubuffet, who had an extensive formal training but integrates Art Brut in his work. Self-taught, he has always been in touch with artists and intellectuals, and has been a keen observer of the artistic scene, both past and contemporary.
Many of his works are monumental in size. Although he hasn’t continuously practiced graffiti on the street, he does introduce the same kind of architectural and urban impact in his work as those who do, in direct communication with all kinds of viewers. Contemporary to other artists who work in a similar vein, such as D. Doyle and Os Gêmeos, Macarrón seeks that direct relationship with the viewer through a spontaneous and visceral drawing practice, which is narrative to a certain extent and exists in open conversation with the comic and graffiti. However, here emotions and mental states take precedence in a representational play that is always imbued in an atmosphere of powerful plasticity.
Rafa Macarrón’s work transcends artistic conventions to connect intimately with both the viewer and society at large. Overflowing with activity, the energy that his paintings distill can be equated to that of the artist, as he works incessantly to capture his surroundings. Rafa Macarrón lives in motion – be it pedaling or painting – and from this internal movement rises a desire not only to himself create, but also to depict the daily movement and creation of others. There is no respire for either the artist of the society that he portrays, conformed in this new body of work by a constant rhythm of figures moving, having fun, showering, smoking or even yawning. Titles such as “Cosmos,” “Genesis,” “343 Souls” or “At Dawn” indicate that, here, personal production constitutes and results in some kind of collective and popular creation, whether it is social, artistic, spiritual or biological.
Daily activity is conformed of innumerable small moments, and Rafa Macarrón pays attention to all of them. His inspiration is both vernacular and academic, and his approach to the moving subject is spontaneous, driven by his creative desire and welcoming the subjectivity of his own viewpoint. Perhaps that is the reason why his figures exist in an dreamlike landscape of bright colors, deformed and fragmented , born
from the imagination and aware of their own unreality.
