David Diao left his home in China under extreme circumstances 61 years ago at the moment of the Communist takeover. The property was confiscated and made into the offices of the Sichuan Daily. By the time of his first visit back 30 years later, the house had been demolished. For years Diao has sought to render his charged feelings about this loss into a group of paintings. He finally did so for his first solo exhibition in China in 2008 at the Courtyard Gallery, Beijing. Postmasters Gallery, New York presented them with additional works in 2009. Galeria Marta Cervera is proud to host the first European exhibition of this body of work.
In an essay David Diao's Da Hen Li House Cycle Philip Tinari writes:
Using his memory and those of his assorted aunts and uncles, and calibrated by the fixed dimensions of the tennis court that was the house's special feature, he conjectured his former reality back into existence. The resulting canvases brim with subtle references to the intertwined languages of architecture, painting, and Chinese, as well as to his project of reconstruction through imagination. (...) In this inherently futile act of seeking to reclaim a bygone space and time, Diao places his typical pictorial wit and skepticism into a new context of historical pathos.
David Diao was featured in "High Times, Hard Times: New York Painting 1965-75" which traveled to numerous museums in the US, Mexico and Europe (2006-2008.) His first solo in Germany at Tanya Leighton in Berlin, "Best Laid Plans" was in 2009. More recently in 2010 he had a solo in Antwerp at Office Baroque Gallery. His work is also in a current show in Paris at Fabienne Leclerc/In Situ.

David Diao dejó su casa en China, bajo circunstancias excepcionales, hace 61 años, cuando el régimen comunista se instaló en el poder. La propiedad fue expropiada y en su lugar se erigieron las oficinas del Sichuan Daily. Cuando volvió por primera vez, treinta años después, la casa había sido demolida. Durante años Diao ha tratado de plasmar sus sentimientos de duelo por esta pérdida en un conjunto de pinturas. Finalmente, presentó los efectos de esta experiencia en su primera exposición individual en China en 2008 en la Courtyard Gallery de Pekín. En 2009, la Postmasters Gallery de Nueva York volvió a presentar esta serie añadiendo numerosas piezas. La Galería Marta Cervera está orgullosa de acoger la primera exposición europea de este proyecto.
Escribe Philip Tinari en su ensayo dedicado al proyecto Casa Da Hen Li: Viví ahí hasta los seis años: “Utilizando recuerdos propios y los de sus numerosos tíos y tías y guiado por las medidas fijas de una cancha de tenis, algo que constituía el rasgo especial de su casa, estableció un vinculo entre aquella realidad anterior y su vida actual. En los lienzos resultantes hay sutiles referencias a distintos lenguajes entrelazados: la arquitectura, la pintura, los ideogramas chinos. Estas pinturas también tienen que ver con un intento de reconstrucción del pasado por medio de la imaginación. Con este acto, intrínsecamente vano, de intentar recuperar un espacio y un tiempo pasados, Diao desplaza su típico ingenio pictórico y su escepticismo en un nuevo contexto de pathos histórico.”
David Diao participó en la exposición High Times, Hard Times: New York Painting 1965- 75 que se presentó en numerosos museos en E.E.U.U. México y Europa en 2006 – 2008. Su primera exposición personal, Best Laid Plans, tuvo lugar en la galería Tanya Leighton de Berlín en 2009. Recientemente, tuvo una personal en la galería Office Baroque, Antwerp. Actualmente está exponiendo en la galería Fabienne Leclerc/In situ de Paris.
