"Paul Pagk: Pintura y Dibujo"
La Galería Marta Cervera tiene el honor de presentar en Madrid el jueves 11 de septiembre la primera exposición individual del artista Paul Pagk: Paul Pagk: Pintura y Dibujo. La exposición se compone de una mezcla de distintos formatos y medios, incluyendo obras sobre lienzo de distintos formatos, así como obras sobre papel.
Los óleos abstractos de Paul Pagk tienen un lenguaje propio y de manera consistente se componen de un campo de color y un dibujo geométrico. El óleo de pincelada variada, profunda y de suave movimiento, genera una luz y unos colores vibrantes. A través de un lenguaje geométrico de líneas dibujadas a mano alzada y una sutil abstracción gestual, su trabajo desafía la planitud del lienzo y transmite una dinámica de fuerzas opuestas y geometrías personales. La obra de Pagk ejerce un poder de tiempo lento, de tiempo suspendido que agudiza la observación, capaz de articular nuevos elementos en una necesidad siempre vigente y actual.
En los formatos de mayor tamaño, fondo y figura se superponen no distinguiendo
claramente qué es fondo y qué es figura. Esta sensación aumenta a medida que los formatos se reducen y el óleo y el lienzo se abren a las transparencias del papel. En contraposición a los lienzos, los dibujos, casi siempre son del mismo tamaño. Los caracteriza la rapidez y espontaneidad con multiplicidad de elementos, como grafito, pastel, wash, acuarela, etc...
Paul Pagk nace en Crawley, UK, 1962. Completa sus estudios en el École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France (1978-1982). Actualmente vive y trabaja en Nueva York. Pagk busca articular nociones de tiempo y espacio. En sus propias palabras: “el espectador accede a la pintura mientras permanece suspendido por los eventos que ocurren dentro de ella; la percepción original del cuerpo y la mente es el punto de partida para un viaje dentro de la pintura”.
Su obra ha sido expuesta en instituciones como el Centre d’Arts Plastiques, Royan (2022), la Fondation Fernet-Branca, Saint-Louis (2021) y el C.R.A.C. Montbéliard (1999), todas en Francia. Ha presentado exposiciones individuales en Miguel Abreu Gallery (2023), Galerie Eric Dupont, París (2019, 2016 y 2014), Baukunst Galerie, Colonia (2008), Markus Winter, Berlín (2007), CRG Gallery, Nueva York (1995 y 1994), Thread Waxing Space, Nueva York (1993 y 1991), Galerie Jean Fournier, París (1987), entre otras. También ha presentado en exposiciones colectivas como en la Galería Marta Cervera, Madrid (2024), Marlborough Gallery, Nueva York (2023), y la Miettinen Collection, Berlín (2020). Pagk forma parte de colecciones permanentes como el Fonds National d’Art Contemporain (FNAC), París; Les Abattoirs, Toulouse; FRAC Picardie, Francia; Springfield Museum of Art, OH; y Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, NH, entre otras. Ha recibido importantes premios y becas, incluyendo la NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship en Pintura (2018), la beca de la Joan Mitchell Foundation (2014), así como las becas de la Pollock- Krasner Foundation y la Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation.

Galería Marta Cervera is honored to present in Madrid, on Thursday, September 11th, the first solo exhibition of artist Paul Pagk: Paul Pagk: Painting and Drawing. The exhibition consists of a mix of various formats and media, including works on canvas in different sizes, as well as works on paper.
Paul Pagk’s abstract oils possess a unique and consistent language made up of a color field and a geometric drawing. The oil, with its varied brushwork, profound and softly moving, generates light and vibrant color range. Through a geometric language of hand-drawn lines (freehand) and a gestural abstraction, his work challenges the flatness of the canvas and conveys a dynamic of personal and opposing geometries. Pagk’s work exerts a power of slow and suspended time that demands observation, capable of articulating new elements with a contemporary relevance.
In the larger-format works, background and figure overlap without a clear distinction between them. This sensation increases as the format of the media is reduced and the oil and canvas give way to the transparencies of paper. In contrast to the canvases, the drawings, almost always in the same format, are characterized by their fluidity and spontaneity, using a multiplicity of elements such as graphite, pastel, wash, watercolor, etc.
Paul Pagk was born in Crawley, UK, in 1962. He completed his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France (1978–1982). He currently lives and works in New York. Pagk seeks to articulate notions of time and space. In his own words:
"The viewer accesses painting while it remains suspended by the events occurring within it; the original perception of the body and the mind is the starting point for a journey within painting."
His work has been exhibited in institutions such as the Centre d’Arts Plastiques, Royan (2022), Fondation Fernet-Branca, Saint-Louis (2021), and C.R.A.C. Montbéliard (1999), all in France.
